Goods in transit
There are two aspects applying here.
Firstly this can be the insurance of goods whilst in transit throughout Great Britain on a specific risk basis. This can apply to and normally applies to own goods being moved, or goods transported by contracted carriers.
Secondly, and more recently the term GIT can also mean cover in respect of the actual carriers liability whilst moving the goods in their custody. In this particular respect referral to respective information should be made to the hauliers/freight forwarders liability content more fully explained herein.
Nevertheless in addition to the carriers legal liabilities the carrier may be asked by, or wish to provide insurance on behalf of, the customer. This can arise in two ways.
Firstly, the customer may ask or require the carrier to provide insurance for the full value of the goods, or it may be the standard practice in a specialised market to provide such cover. Examples may be car transporters, firms specialising in machinery and movers of furniture, etc...
Secondly, the carrier may wish to provide insurance for the customer in order to protect his commercial relationship with the customer. In the first scenario cover is almost readily available but protection for the carriers commercial relationship is, with most Insurers, a somewhat contentious subject. Cover can be provided by Northern Marine Underwriters Ltd and would normally operate on the basis that the policy covers the legal liability of the carrier but is extended at the request of the Insured to cover the full interest of the owner of the goods regardless of liability.
